Newton school temperatures |

|
| At the Newton school students have been measuring temperatures in the air and at the surface of the ground. They have been using thermistors which are special sensors that can be used to measure temperature. They have also been using a datalogger to automatically record the measurements. A datalogger is a small specialized computer that can be used to run instruments and record data. Dataloggers are rugged so that they can work when its cold or hot, wet or dry. Note on the graph how much the air temperature changes. As much as 30oC in a day! The ground temperature hardly changes at all, only a few degrees in the entire winter. That is because the ground is insulated by snow. If you look closely you will see that after March 10 the ground temperature doesn't change at all. It stays at 0oC. Why? Because the snow is melting and the melting point of snow is 0oC. The ground temperature will not change until all the snow has melted. |
