Characterization of the physical properties of the near-surface layers of the ice and the new snow were carried out routinely at the ice stations from 12 August through 20 September. The measurements consisted of a: (1) density profile through the snow and granular layers; (2) a description of the presence and thickness of distinct layers; (3) digital photographs of the grains from each layer; and (4) a determination of the characteristic grain diameter from the photographic images. From digital photographs of ice cores, the full thickness of the surface scattering and surface granular layers was recorded.
