Scans were made from the bow of the ship to get a sampling of all available ice types. The ship was in motion during the measurements. The solid black line is the mean for the 51 measurements and the dashed red line the standard deviation. There was a tremendous range of surface conditions from open water to nilas to thin ice to snow-covered multiyear ice.
