Scans were made from the flying bridge of the ship every 60 seconds. The ship was in motion during the measurements. The solid black line is the mean for the 31 measurements and the dashed red line the standard deviation. The surface was a mixture of freezing bare ice with a light dusting of snow, ponds, and open water. Ponds have frozen over and are snow-covered. Shapes of ponds are still identifiable. The snow is optically thick where it is in drifts.
