Across the top of the world

Ice watch

HOTRAX was a rare opportunity to take a series of snapshot "across the top of the world." To measure the the properties of the atmosphere, ice, and ocean across the Arctic Basin at the end of the summer melt season. These snapshots consisted of observations made during the ice watch, as well as routine atmosphere and ocean measurements made by ship instrumentation. The observations are plotted below as a series moving through time and space from August through September across the Arctic Basin from the Bering Strait to the Fram Strait.

The map to the right shows the cruise track with a dot for every day. The track is color coded week by week to assist in relating the time series plots to position. The white area represents the extent of the ice cover in mid-September.
