How we get to school

Hanover is a wonderful small town in the country, but it is a big town for the area. We are known for having Dartmouth College in our town. We have a lot of stores. Some of our favorites are the Dartmouth Bookstore, College Supplies, the Co-op Food Store, where we get most of our food, and the best ice cream store in the world, Ben and Jerry's. We also have Lui Lui's (a restaurant), the Nugget Movie Theater, the Howe Library, and the Dartmouth Skiway. One place we like to go to in the summer is Storr's Pond. In the spring there are tadpoles in the pond. There is also a pool, snack bar, tennis courts, and a camping area. The students in our class live in lots of different kinds of houses. Some are in the woods with not many people around, others are on busy main roads, and others are on quiet streets.

Hanover is in the northeastern part of the United States. Our weather changes a lot. It can be breezy, chilly, warm, sunny, cloudy, snowy, rainy (sometimes freezing), and stormy. In the winter we get lots of snow and cold temperatures, and can get hot weather in the summer. There is a huge river, the Connecticut River, which separates Vermont and New Hampshire. We have lots of small mountains and trees. On the globe we are close to the Atlantic Ocean. The autumns are beautiful here because the leaves turn colors before they fall off.

We have a great school! It has children from kindergarten through fifth grade. Our school has a music room, gymnasium, art room, library, cafeteria, office, and lots of classrooms in "pods." We also have a computer room, three playgrounds (two in the front and one in the back), a field, a pond, a colonial house, a Kakuli, and a Nature Trail out back. Right now we have 493 students in our school. Kindergarten and first grade are together. We have occasional open houses when parents come in and see how we are doing. There are about 18 or 20 students in most classes except K-1, which has more. We have ten school busses. We also have a lot of student teachers that come here to learn about teaching. This year we loved having a Dartmouth student in our class.

We learn about lots of things in our class. One thing we enjoy is studying about the continents of the world. We are now drawing maps of Asia and are starting to learn about Japan. We have a big Japanese Festival in March that all four third grade classes take part in. Sometimes we go on field trips. We just went to the Hopkins Center and saw a classical piano player. Before that we saw Hula dancers from Hawaii and went to the Montshire Museum of Science. In the spring we are going to go to our state capitol in Concord, New Hampshire. We love our class!

In the autumn the leaves turn red, orange, yellow, brown, and sometimes stay green. We like to jump in piles of leaves. Some of us like to play football and soccer, and ride bikes. School usually starts in August or September. In autumn we wear sweaters and fleeces because the weather starts to get cold. We really like Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Ben and Jerry's ice cream store. Delicious!

In the winter we usually get lots of snow. We build forts and things like that (sometimes kids wreck them). Some kids like to snowboard, cross country ski, and downhill ski. It's very fun! Most everybody skates and sleds. Lots of kids and their parents go to Dartmouth winter sports, especially men's and women's sports. At Christmas time our town puts a Christmas tree in the middle of the Green, which is a large grassy area in the middle of the town.

In spring we can ride our bikes again. It usually gets muddy as the snow melts and the ground thaws. We call it mud season. During mud season we can ride our bikes through muddy water. We love to jump in mud puddles and come home very dirty. We play lots of sports like soccer, lacrosse, baseball, tennis, and kickball. In gym, we like to do Jump Rope for Heart. We also like to play basketball and knockout. In summer we get out of school around the middle of June. Families go swimming in Storr's Pond and the pool. We go over to other children's houses to play. Some of us go to summer camps. There are a lot of camps. Some kids take music lessons. In our spare time we wonder what teacher we will get for the next year. Lots of families go on trips. It is nice to take a vacation. We usually wear shorts, T-shirts, and sandals because it is so hot.

In our class our favorite foods are pasta, pizza, ice cream, macaroni and cheese, popcorn, broccoli, salad with Newman's dressing, chicken, hot dogs, Chinese food, mashed potatoes, and pears.

Occam Pond is a fun place to go ice skating.
