Fairbanks - Anne Wien Elementary

Greetings from  the Anne Wien Elementary School in Fairbanks, Alaska!

Anne Wien Elementary School is located in Fairbanks, Alaska. You can visit our web site.

Our class is a 4-5-6 grade class. There are 9 boys in the class and 14 girls. Our school is located right across from Creamer's Field Wildlife Refuge, so sometimes we can walk over there for a field trip. The Refuge is a popular resting spot for all kinds of migratory birds like sandhill cranes and Canada geese. We also have a slough near our school. A nature walk goes from our school to the slough and back. People can walk, ski, or snowshoe the trail in the winter time. Some people like to snow machine on the slough. We enjoy doing all kinds of activities in the winter. These include: dirt biking, having snowball fights, making snow angels, building a fort, snow machining, playing with dogs, sledding, skate skiing, snow boarding, ice skating, hockey, and building igloos.

In the winter we don’t have very much daylight. On December 5, 2001 sunrise was at 10:29 am and sunset was at 2:52 pm. It also gets very cold in winter. The temperature at school at 12:30 pm was -29°F (-34°C). Outdoor recess is canceled when the temperature is -20°F or colder.

We made examples of ice molecules

 and of stellar snow crystals

Our favorite foods are: Pizza, steak, ribs, burritos, rice, German pancakes, cheese cake, cherry pie, spaghetti, tacos, macaroni and cheese, hamburgers, hot cocoa, bread sticks, snails in butter sauce, and cherry cheesecake.
