Data comparison

Data from 2001

At the Ray school students have been using stakes to measure the snow depth at four places. They put four stakes in a straight line. Each stake is a few meters away from its neighbor. Stakes 4 and 3 are in a field. Stake 2 is at the edge of the field. Stake 1 is under some trees. Each stake has a yellow measuring tape on it.

We have also been using stakes to measure the snow depth on Elson Lagoon in Barrow Alaska. In the graph below we compare the average snow depth at these two sites. Where do you think there was the most snow?

Data from these measurements are plotted in the graphs below.

Here are the snow stakes in Hanover on a snowy day.  Here are the stakes in Elson Lagoon in February.

There is more snow in Hanover than at Elson Lagoon! Sometimes there is a lot more. On February 10 there was 15 cm of snow on Elson Lagoon and 52 cm of snow in Hanover. Strafford Vermont has more snow than Barrow, but less than Hanover.
