Mass Balance: Elson Lagoon

The first bits of ice appeared in Elson Lagoon on September 23, but first more substantial ice cover didn’t form until October 2. During the night of 3-4 October 2000 the wind blew ice out of Elson Lagoon which was ice-free again in the morning. Elson Lagoon began freezing again on the night of 6-7 October 2000.

The Elson mass balance site, located on Elson Lagoon, was initially by snow-covered ice.  At the height of melt, around 15 June, the site was flooded by meltwater, which eventually drained. The site was equipped with four thickness gauges (33, 36, 43, 47) and upward- and downward-looking pingers. A large whirlpool developed near the downward-looking pinger.

A thermistor string at this site measured vertical profiles of temperature.
