Elson Lagoon: Changes |
| There were extensive, and rapid, changes in surface conditions at Elson Lagoon. On 11 June the surface was primarily melting snow and there were few melt ponds. By 13 June the snow had completely melted in many places and ponds had begun to form. As melt continued there was a sharp increase in pond fraction. By 15 June more than three-quarters of the surface was ponded. The flooding was due to the lack of surface topography and the impermeability of the of the Elson Lagoon ice. By 18 June the ice permeability increased, there was significant drainage of meltwater through the ice, and consequently a reduction in the pond coverage. |
